The consumer advocacy group, Public Citizen, has petition the FDA to issue a black box warning for the drug testosterone as a result of recent studies. Those studies, which are discussed here, came out in November and January and show a greater than 30% increase in the risk of heart attack, stroke and death in certain men that take the drug.
A black box warning, which is the most drastic of any warning that the FDA can place on a drug, would warn the physicians and patients about the risks of taking testosterone. There have been 27 trials on the use of testosterone. Interestingly, those sponsored by the drug companies did not show any increased risk while the 14 funded outside of the industry showed that the risk of cardiovascular injuries doubled.
The most common names of the products include Androderm, Androgel, Axiron, Fortesta and Testim.
